REPORTS TO: BOARD OF DIRECTORS

FUNCTION: Responsible for the day-to-day leadership and management, including but not limited to, membership development; community, member and public relations; management of staff; and financial management. Assist staff with program development and volunteer recruitment. Work closely with the Chairman of the Board, the Executive Committee, and the Board of Directors to focus the organization’s priorities on the needs of its members and community.

PURPOSE: The Executive Director serves as an advocate for the business community and acts as the primary liaison with stakeholders, including chamber members and key government and business leaders.

DIRECT SERVICE:
Membership Development

Develop and maintain effective membership development and member services
Identify critical issues that may impact the Chamber and its members
Oversee and implement annual membership campaign; work with Membership Committee and Board of Directors to establish annual membership goal
Direct all membership solicitation efforts to new and current members
Maintain accurate membership records
Prepare prospect lists
Direct follow-up to lapsed/delinquent members


Program Development

Implement all policies adopted by the Board of Directors
Research program options and benefits that will add value to members; implement as appropriate
Assist Events and Marketing Coordinator as needed to plan and execute special events, including but not limited to budget preparation, sponsorship solicitation, promotion, and post-event evaluation
Maintain regular contact with local, regional and state elected officials and organizations to ensure effective government affairs program to represent the interests of the Chamber and its members
Review and evaluate proposed, pending and enacted legislation that will have an impact on the Chamber and/or its members; refer to proper committee for further study and future action
Maintain appropriate relationships with other associations and agencies to enhance the image of the Chamber and attain its objectives
Work accordingly with Board committees


Community, Member and Public Relations

Develop and maintain effective communications that are responsive to members’ needs
Maintain effective internal and external public relations
Assist Events and Marketing Coordinator with communication to members and the general public, including: website, facebook, email, twitter, news releases, newsletters (printed or electronic), brochures, and paid advertising
Serve as liaison with existing members and the community-at-large
Serve as spokesperson for the Chamber in conjunction with the Chairman of the Board


Staff Management

Responsible for hiring, firing and evaluation of Chamber staff
Responsible for maintaining a positive work environment
Responsible for ensuring the Chamber adheres to all state and federal employment regulations


Financial Management

Prepare annual budget and long-range forecast
Prepare monthly financial statements
Manage day-to-day finances, including cash flow management and timely processing of deposits and invoices in accordance with established operating procedures


Volunteer Recruitment

Assist Events and Marketing Coordinator to determine volunteer needs and opportunities as necessary
Assist Events and Marketing Coordinator to recruit volunteers for programs and events as necessary
Assist Events and Marketing Coordinator with training of volunteers to ensure successful programs and events as necessary


Additional Responsibilities

Plan and coordinate meetings of committees and Board of Directors
Prepare written monthly reports, and recommendations as appropriate, to the Board of Directors
Maintain the legal integrity of the Chamber; ensure the organization acts within the specifications identified in the bylaws
With approval of the Chairman, establish organization structure/staffing structure and administrative policies and procedures for office functions
Oversee the activities of the Greater Ashtabula Chamber Foundation
Including, but not limited to, fiscal management, regulatory compliance, building operations, tenant relations, scholarship

Qualifications/Required Skills and Knowledge

Demonstrate a sense of vision for the mission of the Chamber
General knowledge of Ashtabula County
General knowledge of business practices and operations
Familiarity with needs and issues facing business communities in Ashtabula County, Northeast Ohio and the State of Ohio
Strong planning and organizational skills
Ability to communicate effectively (oral and written)
Self-starter with high energy level
Ability to think creatively and offer alternative courses of action
Proven leadership skills
Ability to direct, supervise and delegate work to staff and volunteers
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders (Board of Directors, staff, members, government officials, community agencies/organizations, community-at-large)
Ability to review and appraise program proposals and make solid recommendations to the Board of Directors
Working knowledge of computer systems and accounting software


Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Intermittent physical activity including bending, reaching, and prolonged periods of sitting or standing
Ability to lift approximately 25lbs
Must be able to work flexible hours to accommodate Chamber events and activities
Must have valid Ohio driver’s license
Must provide own transportation. Use of personal vehicle will be reimbursed monthly at the pre-determined rate per mile upon submission of accurate travel log


Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in business administration, management, marketing, or public relations preferred
Prior Chamber of Commerce experience preferred
Demonstrated experience working with a Board of Directors and ability to build consensus
Three to five years of management and staff supervision experience required
